Pirak Mound (historically relevant)
Pirak Mound is a significant historical site situated south of Sibi in the Harnai District of Balochistan province. The Indus Valley Civilization occupied this location from around 1800 BCE to approximately 800 BCE, making it an essential destination for history enthusiasts and archaeologists alike. Excavations at Pirak Mound have unearthed early evidence of ironwork usage, terracotta figurines depicting horses and camels—animals that were likely domesticated during this era in South Asia — as well as indicators suggesting rice cultivation with irrigation systems.
The best time to visit is during March, April, September and October. These months offer the most favorable conditions for visitors.
This location is scientifically significant for providing the first massive evidence of rice cultivation in the region, dating back to 1800 BCE. Excavations revealed specialized storehouses designed specifically for grain, marking a shift in the ancient rural economy.
Look for the remains of standardized mud-brick architecture which featured symmetrical niches inside the rooms. This layout is historically significant as similar designs were still being used in the Kachi region until just a few decades ago.
The mound is vulnerable to wind and rain erosion, as well as unauthorized digging by those looking for artifacts. To help preserve the site, visitors are asked not to disturb the soil or venture into unstable excavation trenches.
