Nanwar Cave
The Nanwar Cave is a known geological feature situated in Mani Khel Dara within the Orakzai District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Spanning approximately 200 meters, this cave boasts two entrances and serves as habitat for various species such as bats and spiders. The origins of Nanwar Cave remain a subject of debate among geologists; theories range from volcanic formation to the creation by an underground water channel eroding limestone over time.
The best time to visit is during March, April, May, September, October and November. These months offer the most favorable conditions for visitors.
Excavations have revealed significant prehistoric remains, including a Neanderthal-type human jawbone and bones from extinct animals like rhinos and lions. Stone tools found here date back over a million years, suggesting the cave was used by multiple hominin species.
Keep an eye out for the limestone formations and the natural water channels carved by seasonal floods. You may also observe the diverse local wildlife, as the cave is home to thousands of bats and spiders.
Explorers should be aware that the cave narrows significantly toward the farther end, which can cause a drop in oxygen levels and a suffocating effect. It is recommended to stay near the main entrances unless accompanied by someone experienced in cave safety.
Some historians believe the cave was used for meditation during the Kushan period around 127 CE, and non-Muslim ancient graves found in the surrounding area support the theory of its long-standing spiritual significance.
