The Himalayan brown bear is a seldom-encountered endangered subspecies in Gilgit-Baltistan, particularly within the Diamer District's remote territories. Accessible primarily via 4x4 vehicles due to rugged terrain, these elusive creatures are more frequently spotted during June through August months. Sightings of this rare bear species tend to occur near Fairy Meadows or Nanga Parbat base camp areas in the summer season—their preferred habitats within Gilgit-Baltistan's wilderness regions surrounding the towering massif. Although Deosai National Park, situated primarily across Skardu and Astore districts, is a well-known protected habitat for these bears, their presence has also been documented elsewhere in this region of dramatic landscapes.
