Excavations of Sirsukh
Sirsukh is an archaeological site situated in Haripur district of the province Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Established during the 1st century CE by King Kanishka of the Kushan dynasty, this ancient city showcases a unique blend of architectural styles with influences from Central Asia. The most striking feature at Sirsukh is its extensive five-kilometer long and over fifty feet thick fortification walls that encircle what was once an expansive urban settlement.
The best time to visit is during October, November, December, January, February and March. These months offer the most favorable conditions for visitors.
Excavations of Sirsukh dates back to 1st century CE.
Excavations of Sirsukh features Kushan / Central Asian architecture.
While major professional excavations occurred under Sir John Marshall in the early 20th century, much of the city remains buried beneath irrigated fields and modern local graveyards, leaving many areas undisturbed.
To preserve the ashlar masonry, visitors should stick to the marked paths and avoid climbing or sitting on the remaining wall structures of the fortified city.
The best views for photography are from the southern and eastern mounds, where the ancient defense walls rise clearly above the surrounding greenery and provide a sense of the city's vast scale.
